French retailer Carrefour has opened its first cash and carry store for wholesale distribution at Seelampur Metro Mall New in New Delhi. The store covers 5,200 sq mts. The store is being viewed as a prototype for future stores and will allow the company to fine tune its learnings on the specificities of the Indian market. Ranked second in the retail industry behind the US giant Wal-Mart, Carrefour is a $140-billion group with a presence in 34 countries and 475,000 employees. The French retailer operates in four formats — hypermarkets, supermarkets, hard discounts stores and convenios. Carrefour sources textiles and fresh produce worth $170 million from India. It works with suppliers and farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, procuring mangoes, pomegranates, onions, cucumber and other vegetables.
